Advisor Marketing Made Simple

A conversation with Kendra Wright | Beyond Referrals Episode 29

There is something I want to say before I get into what we talked about.

‍

Kendra Wright is someone who was kind to me when I was just starting Wonderlab. She gave me her time and her honest advice right at the beginning of building my business, and the direction she gave me quite literally changed the direction of everything that came after.

‍

Getting to tell her that on the podcast, and getting to have this conversation with her, was genuinely special.

‍

And then she went ahead and made advisor marketing simple.

‍

‍

Three Questions. That Is Your Funnel.

‍

The moment I am still thinking about from this conversation is Kendra's reframe on the marketing funnel.

‍

In a compliance-controlled industry, the words marketing funnel tend to make advisors immediately check out. It sounds like automation. It sounds like something that is not for them. Kendra stripped all of that away.

‍

A marketing funnel is three questions. How do people find out you exist? How do they understand the problems you solve? How do they consider hiring you?

‍

That is it. No complicated tech stack. No automation required. Just a clear, honest answer to those three questions, and a consistent effort to answer them for the right people in the right place.

‍

Every advisor reading this can do that. And most advisors have never actually sat down and answered those questions clearly. That is the gap.

‍

‍

Differentiation Is About Unlearning

‍

Kendra's reframe on differentiation is one I will be thinking about for a long time.

‍

Most advisors think differentiation means adding something. A new service, a new credential, a new angle. But Kendra's perspective flips that entirely. Differentiation is really about unlearning who you think you need to be in this industry.

‍

There is a version of the advisor that the industry has told you to be, the way you dress, the way you talk, the clients you go after, the language you use. Most advisors have absorbed that version without questioning it. The ones who are willing to question it, to strip away what they think they are supposed to be and get honest about who they actually are, are the ones who stand out.

‍

That kind of differentiation cannot be copied. It is genuinely yours.

‍

‍

Why Niching Unlocks More Than You Think

‍

Kendra and I are both deeply committed to the power of niche, and this part of the conversation was one of my favorites.

‍

The conventional argument for niching is that it attracts better clients. That is true. But Kendra took it further. Advisors who go narrow do not just attract better clients. They develop IP. They build unique value-add services. They create competitive advantages that nobody else can replicate because nobody else has gone that specific in that direction.

‍

Specificity unlocks creativity. When you know exactly who you serve and what they need, you start building things that are genuinely tailored to them, and those things become the foundation of a brand that cannot be commoditized.

‍

‍

Channel Focus: Be in the Right Place, Not Every Place

‍

One of the most practical pieces of this conversation was Kendra's take on channel selection.

‍

The pressure to be everywhere: LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, email, podcasts, is real. But Kendra's point is simple. Choose the channel where your specific ideal client actually lives. Not the channel that is trending. Not the one that feels safest. The one where the right person is already spending their time.

‍

When your niche is clear and your channel is right, everything you create lands differently. It reaches the people who actually need what you do. That is when marketing starts to feel less like a chore and more like a competitive advantage.

‍

‍

Making It Simple

‍

This is Kendra's superpower and it came through clearly in every part of this conversation.

‍

She takes what feels complicated and overwhelming, funnels, differentiation, niching, channel strategy, and makes it completely accessible without dumbing it down. That is a rare skill. And it is exactly what most advisors need from someone in her corner.
