Beautiful Constraints: How to Build Your Digital Presence Inside Any Ecosystem

A conversation with Sarah LeBlanc | Beyond Referrals Episode 21

There is a version of digital marketing advice for advisors that feels completely overwhelming.

You need a content strategy. You need a YouTube channel. You need an email list and a lead magnet and a podcast and a LinkedIn presence and a consistent posting schedule across multiple platforms. And by the way, you need to do all of that inside a compliance-heavy ecosystem that may limit half of those options.

Sarah LeBlanc sat across from me in this conversation and said something completely different.

Start today. Keep it simple. You can do this.

That felt like the most refreshing thing I had heard in a long time.

The Woman Who Watched It All Happen

Sarah has 25 years of marketing experience. 17 of them as VP of Marketing at LPL Financial. She was in the room at Capital One when "What's in your wallet?" was created, one of the most iconic campaigns in financial services history. She has watched major marketing shifts happen in real time from the inside of one of the largest financial services firms in the country.

That perspective is rare. And it makes the lens she brings to this conversation uniquely valuable.

The Parallel That Should Get Every Advisor's Attention

This was the reframe that set the tone for the whole conversation.

17 years ago, when social media first emerged, advisors did not know what to do with it. There were compliance questions. There was confusion about what was even allowed. There was resistance from people who thought it was a fad or a distraction or a liability. The uncertainty was real and widespread.

Sarah was at LPL watching all of it play out from the inside. And she says what is happening right now with AI looks exactly the same. Same confusion. Same compliance questions. Same resistance. Same uncertainty.

And what happened with social media? The advisors who leaned in early won. The ones who waited for clarity and certainty and permission figured it out five years later and spent that time watching the early adopters build something they could not catch up to.

The message for AI, and for digital presence more broadly, is the same. Lean in early. Start before it feels urgent. Win.

Beautiful Constraints

This is my favorite concept from the entire conversation and I think it is going to change how a lot of advisors think about their situation.

So many advisors inside enterprise ecosystems, Northwestern Mutual, LPL, MassMutual, the major broker-dealers,  feel limited by what they cannot do. No independent email list. No YouTube channel. Restricted content. Limited social media. No open architecture for marketing.

Sarah reframes all of it with two words: Beautiful Constraints.

Where you are is not your limitation. It is your creative brief. The constraint forces you to be specific, to be creative, to build something that works within the parameters you actually have. That is not a disadvantage. That is clarity. What you do have is enough to start. And starting is the only thing that actually matters.

Visibility Plus Credibility Equals Opportunity

Sarah's formula for advisor marketing success is so clean and simple that I want to make sure it does not get lost.

Visibility plus Credibility equals Opportunity.

You do not need to go viral. You do not need a massive following. You do not need to be the most prolific content creator in your market. You need to be visible to the right people, showing up where your ideal clients are looking, and credible when they find you. Your profile, your content, your digital presence should be doing one job: making the right person trust you before they ever meet you.

Do those two things consistently and opportunity follows. It is not more complicated than that.

Compliance as a Partner

This part of the conversation is specifically practical for advisors inside walled ecosystems.

Instead of fighting compliance or treating it as the enemy of marketing, Sarah encourages advisors to put on their own compliance hat. Understand what your firm is actually trying to achieve with its restrictions. Understand the risk they are managing. And then work within that framework creatively instead of spending energy fighting it.

That mindset shift alone changes what is possible. The advisors who have figured out how to build a real digital presence inside compliance-heavy environments are not the ones who found a workaround. They are the ones who found a way to work with what they have.

Start Today

This was the throughline of the whole conversation and I want to end with it because I think it is the most important thing.

You do not need a team. You do not need a budget. You do not need to figure out everything before you start. You need to start.

The advisors who are going to win the next decade are the ones who started showing up digitally before it felt urgent, before everyone else was doing it, before the window closed. This episode gives you the permission and the practical starting point to do exactly that.

Go listen. And then start today.
