Referrals Done Right, A Conversation with Scott Grates
A conversation with Scott Grates | Beyond Referrals Episode 22
There is a version of referral strategy that feels transactional.
Ask every client. Use the right script. Follow up at the right time. Treat referrals like a pipeline activity rather than a natural outcome of excellent service.
Scott Grates has built an entirely different philosophy. And it has produced a seven figure business in New York built on nothing but service, generosity, and genuine commitment to the people around him.
This conversation is one of the most inspiring I have had on this show.
If You Want Referrals You Have to Be Referable
This was the core message of the whole conversation and I want to make sure it lands.
You do not get referrals by asking for them. You get them by being so genuinely excellent, so human, so present with the people you serve that referring you becomes something people actually want to do. It becomes a gift they give to the people they care about rather than a favor they do for you.
Scott gave so many practical, actionable ways to become more referable throughout this conversation. But all of them come back to this foundation: show up so well for the people you serve that your name becomes the obvious answer when someone they know needs what you do.
Wow Moments
This concept keeps coming up in my conversations with the most successful advisors and service professionals, and Scott brought it to life in a really vivid way.
Wow Moments are over the top experiences you create for your clients that make them feel truly seen. Not big expensive gestures. Specificity. Attention. The detail you remembered from three months ago that you acted on because you were paying attention. The card that arrived on exactly the right day. The gesture that required no budget but showed enormous care.
That is what makes people pick up the phone and tell everyone they know about you. Not your credentials. Not your performance. The way you made them feel.
The Tension Between Service and Sales
We went there in this conversation because it is real and it deserves an honest answer.
Every service-based business owner has felt it. The pull between wanting to be in pure service mode, genuinely, fully focused on the person in front of you, and needing to grow and survive. The discomfort of needing to ask for something when your whole orientation is about giving.
Scott has a really honest and practical perspective on navigating that tension. His answer is not to eliminate the tension but to resolve it by making your service so extraordinary that the growth takes care of itself. When you are genuinely referable, asking for referrals becomes less necessary. The people who love working with you become your sales force because they want to be.
Referrals AND Digital Presence
This was one of my favorite moments of the whole conversation and I think it is one of the most important things for advisors to hear.
So many advisors think they have to choose. I am going to build my business through referrals OR through social media and content. It is one strategy or the other.
Scott made the case beautifully that you need both. And that they actually make each other stronger in ways most people have not fully thought through.
Your digital presence validates your referrals. When someone gets referred to you and goes looking for more information, what they find either confirms the referral or undermines it. A strong digital presence, a clear profile, authentic content, a visible point of view, makes every warm introduction you receive more likely to convert.
And your referrals deepen your digital credibility. The social proof of a genuine recommendation carries weight. Combined with a digital presence that reflects who you actually are, it creates a compounding cycle of trust.
You do not have to pick. You need both.
The Key Relationship List
This is the operational side of being referable and it is something every advisor can implement immediately.
Scott uses a Key Relationship List to manage, sustain, and nurture his most important relationships over time. Not a CRM full of thousands of contacts. A focused, intentional list of the people who matter most to his business and his community, with a system for staying genuinely present in their lives.
The concept is simple. The discipline required to maintain it is not. But the return on that discipline is everything Scott has built.
The Book
Referrals Done Right is Scott's book and it is the full framework, the Infinite Referral Advantage, the Wow Moments system, the Key Relationship List, all of it laid out in a practical and actionable way.
Go get it. Link is in the show notes.
The Takeaway
The human side wins. In a world of AI and digital noise and commoditized content, leaning into genuine human connection, extraordinary service, and real community is your single biggest competitive advantage.
Scott's life and business are proof of that. And this conversation will leave you inspired and equipped to start building the same thing.
