The Decline of Institutional Trust and the Rise of Personal Brand
A conversation with Kristoff Hart | Beyond Referrals Episode 20
Something is shifting in financial services. And in legal. And in accounting. And in real estate.
The old ways of building trust still work. Referrals, events, in-person connection, warm introductions. Those are not going anywhere. But the context in which they work has changed completely. And the advisors and service professionals who understand that shift are the ones who are going to win.
Kristoff Hart understands it better than almost anyone I have spoken to. And this conversation is one of my favorites on this show.
An Outside-In Perspective
What made this conversation different from almost anything I have done on Beyond Referrals is where Kristoff comes from.
He is not inside financial services. He is not inside Northwestern Mutual. He is not selling a course to advisors. He has worked at the highest levels of media and marketing: The Chosen, House of David, Warner Music Group, Bruno Mars, and he brings that lens to the question of how high trust service professionals build digital presence that actually converts.
That outside-in perspective changes the quality of the insight. Because Kristoff is not rationalizing the constraints of the industry. He is asking the real question: what actually works when the stakes are high and the trust requirement is real?
The Decline of Institutional Trust
This was the reframe that set the tone for the entire conversation.
Trust in institutions is declining. Banks, firms, corporations, established brands, the automatic credibility that used to come with institutional affiliation is eroding. People are less likely to trust something because of where it comes from and more likely to trust it because of who is behind it.
Trust in individuals is rising.
For advisors and service professionals, that is not a threat. That is the single biggest opportunity of a career. Because what people are looking for, what they have always been looking for in high trust decisions about their money, their legal matters, their assets, is a person they can trust. Not a logo. A person.
The question is whether you are positioned to be that person when someone goes looking.
Digital Is the Gateway
Before someone picks up the phone, they have already Googled you.
Before they accept a referral introduction, they have looked you up on LinkedIn. Before they show up to a first meeting, they have formed an impression of who you are and whether you are worth their time. Your digital presence is doing something in that window. The only question is whether it is working for you or against you.
Kristoff framed this clearly: digital is not a replacement for relationships. It is the gateway to them. It is what happens before the relationship begins. And in a world where that pre-meeting research is now universal, having no digital presence is not neutral. It is a disadvantage.
The Goal Is Not Virality
This was my favorite moment of the entire conversation and I want to make sure it does not get lost.
So many advisors approach content thinking about reach. Impressions. Follower counts. Views. They measure success by how many people saw something rather than by what happened as a result of someone seeing it.
Kristoff reframed this completely.
The goal is not virality. The goal is making your ideal client feel seen. Specificity is what converts. Not reach. When the exact right person reads your content and feels like you are speaking directly to them, directly to their situation and their fears and their goals, that is when trust begins. That is when the phone rings. That is what the whole thing is for.
Trying to reach everyone produces content that resonates with no one. Trying to make your ideal client feel seen produces content that converts.
Blending the Old and the New
This is where the conversation got really practical and I think it is the most useful part for advisors who are trying to figure out what this actually means for their business.
Referrals still build the business. Events still build the business. In-person connection still builds the business. That is not changing. What has changed is what happens after the referral is made.
Your digital presence should be working while you sleep to validate every warm introduction you make. When someone gets referred to you and goes looking for more information, what they find should be building the case for why they should trust you — confirming the referral, deepening the impression, removing the doubt. If what they find is nothing, or worse, something that does not reflect who you actually are, you are leaving conversion on the table.
Digital is not a separate workstream. It is the layer underneath everything you are already doing that either amplifies or undermines it.
What Goes Wrong
Kristoff was honest about why most service professionals who try to build a digital presence do not see results.
They try to do too much. They start without clarity on who they are talking to. They create content that is about themselves rather than about the person they are trying to reach. They give up before the compound effect kicks in. And they treat it as a separate workstream instead of integrating it into what they are already doing.
The fix is not more content. It is more specific content, directed at the right person, built on a clear point of view, sustained long enough to actually work.
Building Everything at Once
Kristoff and I ended the conversation somewhere personal, the reality of building a family, a business, and a brand all at the same time.
If you are in that season right now, you will appreciate this part of the episode. It is honest, it is real, and it is one of the most human moments I have had on this show.
The Takeaway
We are in a unique moment right now. Every high trust service professional is trying to figure out what digital presence actually means for their business. The answer is not complicated. Your ideal client needs to feel seen. Your digital presence needs to be the gateway to a relationship, not a replacement for one. And the shift from institutional trust to individual trust is not a threat. It is the biggest opportunity of your career.
Go capture it.
