The Wake Up Call
A conversation with Matt Halloran | Beyond Referrals Episode 27
I want to be upfront about what this episode is.
It is not a comfortable one. It is not going to leave you feeling like everything is fine and the path forward is clear. It is going to leave you convicted, urgently convicted, with a real sense of what is at stake right now for advisors and firm leaders who are not paying attention.
That is exactly why you need to hear it.
The Asteroid Analogy
Matt Halloran has a way of saying things that cuts through.
AI is the asteroid coming to wipe out the dinosaurs.
He said it directly and without apology. And he is right. The advisors and firms that are not getting serious about AI right now, not experimenting with it, not building fluency, not thinking about what it means for how they serve clients and run their practice, are taking a risk that they may not fully understand yet. The window for getting ahead of this is narrowing.
This is not about becoming a tech expert. It is about recognizing the moment you are in and responding to it with the seriousness it deserves.
The Advisor Shortage Nobody Is Talking About Enough
We are already 100,000 advisors short of meeting today's demand.
That number is not a projection. It is the current reality. And less people are coming into this field because the industry is clinging to a model that was built for a different era and a different kind of recruit.
The next generation of advisors does not want what was offered to the last generation. They want something different, in terms of culture, values, compensation structure, and what the work actually looks like day to day. If the industry does not reckon with that honestly and reimagine the opportunity it is offering, the shortage is going to get significantly worse.
This is a leadership problem as much as it is a recruiting problem. And it starts with being honest about what is not working.
The Great Wealth Transfer
Matt has studied this extensively and this part of the conversation deserves its own seat.
The great wealth transfer is not a future event. It is happening now. Trillions of dollars are moving between generations. Gen Xers, women, next generation clients, the demographics of who holds wealth and who makes financial decisions is shifting dramatically. And the practices that are positioned to serve those demographics are going to capture something extraordinary. The ones that are not are going to watch it pass them by.
The question is not whether this is happening. The question is whether your practice, your team, your communication style, and your value proposition are built for the people who are about to need you most.
Shut the F Up and Listen
This is Matt's book and the philosophy behind it landed in this conversation in a way that I have been sitting with ever since.
Most people are listening to respond. They are formulating their next point while the other person is still talking. They are waiting for their turn rather than actually hearing what is being said. That is true in client meetings. In team conversations. In marriages and friendships and everything that matters.
Real listening is a skill. And Matt makes the case that it might be the single most important professional skill in financial services right now, because AI can produce information but it cannot replace the human being who actually hears what a client is saying and responds to the whole person.
This is something I am actively working on after this conversation. And I think most of us should be.
The Urgency
I do not want to soften the message of this episode because Matt did not soften it.
Get serious about AI. Now, not someday. Understand the great wealth transfer and position your practice accordingly. Think honestly about what the next generation of advisors needs from this profession and whether you are offering it. And practice real listening, with your clients, your team, and the people in your life.
This is the moment. The advisors and firm leaders who treat it that way are going to build something that lasts. The ones who do not are going to find out what the asteroid feels like.
