Why You’re Not Winning on LinkedIn, a Conversation with Professional LinkedIn Ghostwriter Evan Kuterbach
A conversation with Evan Kuterbach | Beyond Referrals Episode 12
"LinkedIn doesn't work."
It's one of the most common things I hear from advisors. And every time I hear it, I think the same thing, they haven't learned how to use it, or they haven't given it enough time.
That's exactly what Evan Kuterbach and I got into in this conversation. And by the end of it, I was more convinced than ever that LinkedIn is one of the most underutilized tools available to financial advisors right now, not because it's easy, but because most people are approaching it completely wrong.
LinkedIn Rewards Specificity
This was the moment that stopped me mid-conversation.
Specificity is everything on LinkedIn. A specific profile. Speaking to a specific person. Addressing a specific pain point. When you're vague, when your profile could apply to anyone and your content speaks to no one in particular, LinkedIn punishes you for it. Not with an algorithm slap, but with silence.
When you get hyper specific and pair that with consistency and real engagement, something shifts. You unlock access to a world you currently don't have. Conversations start. Connections deepen. Pipeline builds.
That reframe is everything for advisors who have been showing up vague and wondering why nothing is working.
Good Copy Is Simple
Clarity is a superpower. Confusion is a conversion killer.
You cannot have ambiguity in your content or your copy. Simple, clear, specific, that's what converts. The advisors who are winning on LinkedIn aren't writing complicated thought leadership pieces. They're writing clearly, in plain language, about things their specific audience actually cares about.
If someone reads your profile or your post and has to think about what you do or who you serve, you've already lost them.
LinkedIn Is a Networking Tool, Not a Broadcasting Tool
This is where most advisors go wrong. They post something, close their laptop, and wonder why nothing happens.
LinkedIn is not a megaphone. It's a room full of people. And the question is, how would you show up if you were actually in that room?
You'd engage. You'd ask questions. You'd respond to what others were saying. You'd make real connections, not just broadcast your credentials into the void.
Engagement, consistency, and genuine connection are what turn content into pipeline. There's no shortcut. There's no hack. You have to show up like a human being.
Personal Stories Are What Convert
People are exhausted by generic content. And they can spot AI-generated slop from a mile away.
What actually stops someone mid-scroll is a real story. A moment of honesty. Something that feels like it came from a person, not a content machine. Personal stories build trust in a way that no polished thought leadership piece ever will, because trust is built through recognition, and recognition comes from feeling like you know someone.
Your voice is your differentiator. Use it.
What's Coming, and Why Advisors Need to Pay Attention Now
Evan made two predictions that I think every advisor should hear.
Short-form video on LinkedIn is coming in a big way. If you've been building that muscle on Instagram or YouTube, you're ahead. If you haven't started yet, now is the time.
LinkedIn Live is already working. I've hosted one myself and saw a real lift, including clients who came directly from it. If you haven't explored LinkedIn Live yet, put it on your radar.
The Question That Matters Most
Everything Evan and I talked about comes down to one honest question.
Are you actually willing to go all in?
Not halfway. Not "I'll try it for a month." All in, consistent content, daily engagement, a specific profile, a real voice, and the patience to let it compound.
If the answer is yes, this episode is your starting point. If the answer is no, that's okay, but don't half-do it. Half-effort on LinkedIn produces nothing.
Three things to implement this week: make your profile more specific, start engaging every single day, and post content in your actual voice with real personal stories. That's it.
